What is Take It Down?

Take It Down is a tool developed by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) to help children and adolescents stop websites from sharing their intimate photos without their consent.

Take It Down works with various websites to ensure that such content is quickly removed to protect the people involved. It's free, anonymous, and available to anyone in the world.

How does it work?

A photo or video of naked or partially naked minors will contain information that makes it possible to assign a code, called a hash value. Each hash value is unique, like a digital fingerprint. It allows the content to be searched for on participating websites. If found, the system removes the photo or video without it being uploaded or watched. You don't have to answer any personal questions about the situation. The service only needs some general information about the photo/video.

What happens when intimate photos/videos are uploaded?

If your case was created successfully, you'll receive a case number from Take It Down which you can use to check your case status. Keep this number so that you can refer to it later.

Take It Down will present your case to the participating websites. If they find your content, they'll consult their guidelines and carry out appropriate measures if necessary.

Please note that after a case is withdrawn, the participating websites reserve the right to continue to use your hash(es) if they have received information on content that violates their user guidelines.
